ARCHIVE TV ADVENT CALENDAR DAY ELEVEN: 11 December 1988

It’s Sunday, so it must be The South Bank Show (ITV).

Here’s a look at “secondmost-trusted face in America” John Houseman: film producer, actor, writer & director. The other person behind the War of the Worlds radio broadcast & Citizen Kane.

  1. John Houseman’s first-ever film acting role was not The Paper Chase, as he was in John Frankenheimer’s Seven Days In May in 1964, though it’s an easy mistake to make as he was uncredited in Seven Days In May (even though it’s a rather important, if brief, speaking role). He was also in Too Much Johnson, the film portion of a 1938 multi-media project from Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre combining a silent film with a stage production, though in 1988 this was believed lost (a print was discovered in 2008 in Italy). The Paper Chase was his first credited film acting role though, and the most substantial.
